On the corner of Burnley Street and North Street, impossible to miss thanks to its striking sky-blue facade. They use Maker beans for their coffee, and the focaccia, pastries, and sourdough are all genuinely excellent. In the morning, sunlight filters in and the shadows of bird-of-paradise leaves sway across the tables — a lovely, easy mood. Perfect for a leisurely breakfast with coffee.

Tucked into the corner of a red-brick, warehouse-like building, this is the kind of place you'd never find unless a friend told you about it. The space is generous and airy, with big windows letting the light pour in, and both the coffee and the food are genuinely good. Great with friends, for a leisurely brunch, or for working solo.

A 2025 newcomer on Church Street, with a charming logo and an even more charming facade. Green tiled counters and vintage wall panelling, paired with abstract oil paintings around the space, make it an easy place to settle into with a friend for a long chat. The coffee is reliably good, as always, and the sandwiches are well worth it too. I usually swing by here after browsing Richmond Trader, where I leave the car — street parking right outside the café is limited.

A well-known Melbourne sandwich chain. This little corner store on Buckingham Street regularly has a queue out the door, especially around breakfast and lunch — the sandwiches are a genuine local favourite. My personal pick is the mushroom one, which suits an Asian palate well. The portions are generous — if I buy one for breakfast, it usually covers lunch too. The coffee and matcha are both excellent as well. Almost everyone takes away here; there's only a handful of outdoor seats. Budget some time for the queue.

The second location, near Richmond train station, has more seating and is set up for sitting in. Beyond the sandwiches, there's a bigger range of desserts here — though fair warning, they're genuinely, properly sweet. Kids tend to love them.

Right across from Richmond Citizens Park, with a lovely outdoor seating area. On a warm Melbourne day, having brunch out here is just about as Richmond as it gets. The salads here are a highlight — the broccoli one in particular is a personal favourite of mine. The coffee is reliable too, never bitter, never disappointing. A genuine local favourite.

Tucked inside Victoria Gardens Shopping Centre, with a bicycle hanging above the shopfront that's hard to miss — it's pretty much my go-to landmark when meeting friends. The coffee here is exactly the kind of solid, standard Melbourne coffee I love. Their iced matcha latte is especially good. A croissant and an egg salad cup are what I usually order. They've recently started selling fresh milk in glass bottles too. I really love the green of their logo.

A distinctive café and restaurant on Bridge Road. The food here is rich in both colour and flavour, and the coffee is made with Padre beans. The brunch menu is extensive — if you're going on a weekend, it's best to book ahead on their website. The best parking nearby is inside Richmond Trader.

French, exactly as the name suggests. Sitting right at the junction of Walmer Street Bridge and the Yarra Trail. On a sunny summer morning, having breakfast and coffee by the river is genuinely lovely. Local residents, office workers, and cyclists all tend to stop by here for a coffee. I often grab one here myself partway through a walk.

A small, cosy little shopfront. If you're after a sense of old-time charm, this is the place. The coffee never disappoints.

I often stop in here for a little sit-down after grocery shopping at Coles — the window seats are perfect for staring off into space with a coffee. The coffee itself is solid, standard Melbourne fare.

On Burnley Street, and busy pretty much every time I go. Both the coffee and the food have a great reputation, and plenty of locals love this place. To me, cafés like this — rather than the famous CBD hotspots — are the real essence of Melbourne. If you want to experience how locals do coffee, breakfast, and afternoon tea, this is the one I'd recommend.

A black exterior with gilded lettering — probably exactly where the name comes from, and it looks effortlessly cool from the outside. Beyond the good coffee, I'd really recommend the toasties here. The bread is toasted properly crisp, oozing with every bite. Coffee almost never disappoints anywhere in the 3121 postcode — this is, after all, old Melbourne's home turf.
